Drugs and alcohol – workplace hazards
The New Zealand Drug Foundation estimates the economic and social cost of alcohol and drug-related harm to be in the billions of dollars every year. Drug and alcohol use impacts New Zealand workplaces across multiple industries in a variety of ways, including:
Chance of personal injury
Employees affected by drugs and alcohol have a higher chance of injuring themselves and others, and even causing death, while on the job.

Increased costs for employers
Employers are faced with financial, HR, insurance and legal costs for situations from lateness, absenteeism and presenteeism - where a worker shows up to work but isn’t adequately able to perform their duties - to loss of production, increased error rates, tenuous customer-client relationships and workplace injuries, accidents and incidents.
Increased risk for colleagues
Their colleagues are at increased risk of injury, increased workload and stress.
Is not testing worth the risk?
Not testing your staff for drugs and alcohol can lead to risks and consequences for your business, the workforce, clients and potentially the general public. Additionally, if an accident – or worst-case scenario, a fatality - does occur, it could result in a workplace shut down, large fines, or even prosecution.
Potential consequences of not testing include:
- Unsafe work environment
- High turnover, e.g., employees not wanting to work in an unsafe environment
- Higher insurance premiums or reduced ability to become insured
- Non-compliance with New Zealand legislation: Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the Privacy Act 1993 and the Human Rights Act 1993
- Workplace shutdowns
- Criminal liability and prosecution
- Financial penalties, e.g., large fines
- Loss of business and reputation.

Types of Tests
Employers often have a lot of questions when it comes to drug and alcohol testing, not least of which is, “What method of testing is best for us?”. Drug Testing Solutions works with you to get an understanding of your business and requirements so that we can advise you on the methods of testing, timing of the tests, and the drugs that can be detected in tests. Ultimately however, what, when and how we test is up to you – testing on your terms.
We use the following testing methods:
Urine drug screen (UDS)
Urine drug screening is the most commonly used method of testing in New Zealand. UDS detects historical use (days and weeks) of a number of controlled and illicit drugs so may not be relevant for identifying when it is safe to work; however, it will help to identify habitual and frequent drug users.
Oral Fluid Testing (OFT)
Less invasive than urine drug screening, the testing of oral fluid (saliva) detects drug use within a shorter window than UDS, hours rather than days or weeks. As a testing method it is growing in popularity in high-risk industries such as forestry, where safety is critical and can be greatly compromised by recent use of drugs and alcohol of any team member.
Alcohol testing
We have a more targeted programme for alcohol testing.
